Hannah’s current practice is an exploration of death, decay, impermanence and permanence through the mediums of drawing and traditional black and white photography. She is investigating the portrayal of the degradation of humanity in our society through images of decaying subjects as well as decaying family photographs and allowing her own work to decay. She is reflecting on this through ideas of loss and memories and the cheimcal process in conflict with the memories recorded delicately as an image. She is achieving this through her current exploration of decaying photos of past memories, using memories friends or family who are now deceased and the places and objects associated with them.
She has also been investigating ‘Memento Mori’ (Remember you will die), as an on going relating theme, which has been used as a catalyst for her work. Decaying images of family memories and events are being used to examine our fear of death. Our wishes for immortality coinciding with this to integrate with it.
Decay and permanence are taken literally and metaphorically, and reflected upon through process and sequences within her work. To become something less personal that we can relate to but something we all must eventually come to terms with.
